CLAUDE LEON FOUNDATION HONOURS BURSARIES
Numerous studies have shown that South Africa is not
producing enough PhD Graduates to meet the demands
for the high-level skills required for an emerging
knowledge economy and the provision of academics to
staff the universities. A key step in the production
of new PhD Graduates is the Honours year. Without an
Honours Degree students cannot study for a Masters
or PhD Degree. The Claude Leon Foundation recognised
the importance of an Honours Degree and in 2006
called for applications from certain research
universities for the funding of Honours students.
The Universities of Cape Town, Rhodes and
Witwatersrand were selected and the first Honours
Bursaries were awarded in 2007. In 2011 the
University of Stellenbosch was added to the list of
universities supported annually.
There is
no application process for the Honours Bursaries and
the Foundation will decide on the Universities that
it will support. |
