The Claude Leon Foundation

The Sozo Foundation is a non-profit organisation based in the impoverished township of Vrygrond, Cape Town. Founded in 2011, the Sozo Foundation creates opportunities for holistic development through four key areas: Youth, Education, Health and Skills.
The Claude Leon Foundation supports Sozo’s education project, Educentre, which offers after-school tutoring and mentorship for high school learners from the Vrygrond community. The programme equips and raises up tomorrow’s leaders, transforming the life of the individual learner as well as their families. As a result, the learner’s ability to secure a decent job is increased, breaking the cycle of poverty.
Sixty learners currently receive intensive academic support throughout the week at the Sozo Centre. In addition to academic support, the programme also provides learners with emotional support; each learner is assigned a mentor and has access to the services of a dedicated social worker.

Educentre encourages learners to not only succeed in high school, but go on to achieve their dreams after school. The program includes educational outings and courses that expose learners to career and tertiary education opportunities, and incorporates computer literacy, a foundational skill needed to secure a decent job.
